4 steps to easy, breezy waves

4 steps to easy, breezy waves

For fall, models were doing the wave all over the catwalk—whether slight kinks with beachy texture, wider glossy bends, or something in between. “Straight hair is over. Everyone wants the tousled look,” declares Sarah Mccay, hairstylist extraordinaire at Salon Dew in Yorkville, over the whizzing of hair dryers at Revlon`s Rev the Red Carpet event. I’m keen to jump on this bandwagon being a girl with frizzy curls that just won’t quit.

The thing is, every time I tell myself that today is the day I’m going to get up early and achieve that perfect wave, inertia kicks in and I find myself returning to my tried and true ballerina bun. It’s hard to even muster up the courage in those groggy mornings to apply eyeliner, let alone get out the hair tool. Besides, when our city is filled with celebrities, I’d prefer to spend my time mapping out the star-studded hotspots (Because, TIFF!!) to check out than fret over creating a coiffured masterpiece.

If you’ve ever found yourself in this same position, fret no more.  Mccay showed me how to untangle my unruly bun and has laid out the four easy steps you need to know to achieve loose waves at home. If you want a look that transitions seamlessly from day to night with no touch-ups required, it’s time to bookmark this page and keep it handy.

Step-by-step instructions:

1. Prep: Apply a dab of Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream to make for an easy blow dry. This product works on dry or damp hair.

Morroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream, $37, moroccanoil.com/canada.

2. Smooth: Whether you need a simple brush or a heavy-duty blowout like my curls did, smoothing out your locks will help to preserve the shine in your waves later on. It also helps to blow-dry your hair right after washing it, in the event that you may want to try a style like this in the coming days.

3. Curl: Wrap large sections of hair around a wide-barrel curling iron starting at the crown of your head (a little below the top of your head), and wind strands away from your face.  “The bigger the section, the softer the wave, and vice versa,” says Mccay. The key to achieving the perfect wave lies in varying how tight you wrap strands around the iron and leaving the ends away from the barrel in order to elongate the overall style.

4. Tousle: For that effortlessly disheveled look, run your fingers, or a wide tooth comb, through your hair, starting at the scalp and working your way to the ends. Spray Revlon’s Style Masters Photo Finisher Hair Spray throughout for lasting hold that won’t leave hair crunchy or create dried white flakes.

Et voilà, you’re done. The best thing about this style is that it still has body and a sexy wave on day two- leaving you more time to hunt Channing Tatum down,

Pro tip: Invest in a hair primer to apply before styling. It will extend the life of your hairstyle. Try Living Proof Prime Style Extender, $25, sephora.ca.
