‘I didn’t think I was good enough’: Anne Hathaway talks finally being comfortable with herself after years of ‘trying to be someone else

She was once on the receiving end of a wave of criticism from social media users (#hathahaters) and journalists alike, for her goody two-shoes image and that overly-rehearsed 2013 Oscars acceptance speech.
But Anne Hathaway is more at ease with who she is nowadays as the actress explains to InStyle for its September issue.
The 32-year-old tells the magazine: ‘There was a stretch of my life when I wasn’t comfortable being myself. I didn’t think I was good enough. So I pretended to be someone I wasn’t.

Sitting cross-legged and flashing a subtle smile on the cover of the new issue, Anne shows off her flawless complexion with ruby red lipstick and a little mascara.
She wears a soft pink shift dress and luxurious red coat which slips off one shoulder as she poses with her chin resting on one hand.
‘I’m so over that now. I just try to be my best self all the time, with some notable late-night lapses.’ she added with a giggle.
The Les Misérables star reflected on a particularly scathing article by the New York Times after she scooped the best supporting actress Oscar for the Tom Hooper musical in 2013.

‘For a very long time I felt I was being hunted, and it made me very unhappy.’
Anne says she now feels more free to be herself and is less afraid of public scrutiny, so much so, that she now has an Instagram account.
‘There is something great about being able to say “I saw this beautiful thing today” and have people who don’t really care about you get excited by it.’
She concluded: ‘In the past few years I’ve been working on changing the script inside my head. Life’s too short to be anyone but yourself. Let the chips fall where they may.’

The star is enjoying some downtime after her recent seven-week stint on Broadway in the one-woman show Grounded
Anne is currently staying in New York with her jewelry designer husband Adam Schulman and explained that she is spending a leisurely summer there to be near her family in New Jersey.
She and Adam sold their Brooklyn apartment in 2014 and have decamped to LA full-time.
The actress recently completed a seven-week stint on her well-received Broadway show Grounded so is welcoming some downtime.
She can next be seen on the big screen in The Intern opposite Robert De Niro which is released September 25.
